Let’s turn to Isaiah chapter 17.
1: The burden against Damascus.
“Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city, and it will be a ruinous heap.
2: The cities of Aroer are forsaken; they will be for flocks which lie down,
and no one will make them afraid.
3: The fortress also will cease from Ephraim,
the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria;
They will be as the glory of the children of Israel,” says Yahweh of hosts.
Damascus is the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city. The events that Isaiah is speaking about have never happened in the past so we can be sure that it is for our time. He speaks of a total destruction of Damascus so that it is no longer a city at all but a heap of ruins. Surely this is the kind devastation that only nuclear bombs create. Now notice what happens at the same time: the fortress ceases from Ephraim! This prophecy of Damascus’ destruction is concurrent with the total loss of American power, its fortress. Once we know who modern Ephraim is, scriptures open up to us in a powerful way. Ephraim has a fortress in the last days, at the time Damascus is destroyed. But Damascus’ destruction means the end for America’s power too.
If we put this together with what we know about the beast that is modern America and its plans for a war with Iran, a picture begins to emerge about how and when this might happen. Iran will be an enemy like no other that America has ever faced. She has the most powerful allies in the world, namely Russia.
Russia is not only Iran’s ally but also Syria’s. The US and Israel have already determined that the war with Iran must involve the use of nuclear weapons. They know it’s dangerous and will likely try to inflict the most damage in the shortest possible time and their targets are too heavily fortified for conventional bombs. Once nuclear weapons are unleashed in the Middle East it is not hard to see how things will quickly spiral out of control. Medium and long range ballistic missiles can be launched in minutes and once started escalation will be faster than rational thought can process. It’s easy to see how Damascus would be ‘nuked’ and how a major nuclear power like Russia would become involved in a terrifying moment.
In December 2007 then Russian president Putin stated that any attack on Iran would be regarded as an attack on Russia herself. Further, in an interview with German television in late August 2008 that was banned in the US and censored in Europe, Putin said that Russia may start using the illegal tactics of the US. He was responding to criticism that Russia had violated international law by putting down the Georgian revolt in August 2008. Russia knows what the US and Israel were up to in Georgia and her immediate, decisive and uncompromising response to the provocation should be taken as a foretaste and forewarning of how Russia will respond to a US and Israel led war against its allies in the Middle East. It may be that the war plans against Iran have been set back by this unanticipated response, but have they been shelved?
Now, let us return to Daniel’s vision.
